That evening, Raysha lay panting on the ground, the darkness barely hiding the scratches, burns, and bruises decorating her skin.

A fat raindrop splashed onto her face. Storm clouds pressed down ominously, flashes of lightning hidden away deep within. The ground trembled under the thunder and pressure of the clouds, their great masses seeming to squeeze Raysha’s soul.

She lay there, the wet grass seeping into her clothes, and waited for the heavens to open up on her.

“Want to call it there for the night?” Kardan asked.

He stood out of reach by her side, hands resting on his blunted training swords. Across the field, Vashi and Leyli continued their one-sided duel, Leyli hurling elemental attacks that Vashi’s shields caught without fail.

Raysha knew that Leyli would win—it was just a matter of time. Vashi had a few burns of his own, and it wasn’t the first time this duel had been played out.

She continued to stare up at the clouds. “Sorry about today,” she said.

“Don’t know what you’re talkin’ about,” he said, casting his gaze to the sky as well.

“My brother jumps in enough for me—I don’t want you to do it too. If I don’t learn to fight my own battles, how am I supposed to survive?”

Kardan didn’t respond, and Raysha just heard a long, slow exhale. She was glad he didn’t try and dig into the issue.

“I got us a ticket each,” she added.

“You didn’t promise to do anything… did you?”

Raysha turned her head, fixing the boy with a disbelieving stare. He got the message after a few seconds.

“Sorry, yeah, I mean, thanks, sounds good.”

“No problems,” she said, letting her head fall back to the ground and staring up at the flickering clouds again.

The silence stretched on. Should I try and explain more?

“When is it?” Kardan said.

“Tomorrow evening.”

Kardan groaned. “That bastard. How much did you have to pay?”

“Why?”

“Because the things will be worthless in less than a day, and who knows how many he had to dole out. He probably would have sold them for a pittance!”

Raysha closed her eyes and fought the desire to go throw some rocks through the Thistle’s windows. Bastard took me for two silver cards. She heard Kardan go to speak again. “Don’t ask. Just don’t.”

He paused for a moment and clearly changed what he had been going to say. “Lucky we didn’t wait to go to the Thistle until the next round; we’d have missed it.”

“I guess that’s something,” Raysha said sourly.

“And if you’re taking tomorrow off, you should probably stop lazing about, then.”

Raysha turned her head with glacial slowness.

Kardan smirked at her. Raysha kicked her legs out and flipped onto her feet, then swept up her staff. The young man let out a high-pitched whistle and drew his swords. “There’s a drowned rat needing some attention over here,” he called out.

Raysha started reforming her reflective barrier.

“About time!” a cheery voice responded. Blond hair flitted in the breeze, and Leyli broke off her spar with Vashi, forming an orb of blue flame in each hand. Ganging up on Raysha was always met with enthusiasm.
